# Five Questions That Go Beyond Insurance

 October 01 2026

![Five Questions That Go Beyond Insurance](https://koppingerins.com/hubfs/strategic%20business%20meeting.jpg)

Your insurance program should follow your business strategy,
not last year's renewal

Your business can change significantly in 12 months. Your insurance program may not.
New customers, contracts, equipment, employees, technology, acquisitions, and expansion can all change your company's risk. Yet many insurance conversations still focus primarily on premiums, limits, and deductibles.

A broker who understands where your business is going is better positioned to identify emerging risks and make sure your insurance and benefits programs support your business strategy.
The conversation should start with these five questions.

1\. What's changed in your business since we last talked?
Growth creates opportunity, but it can also introduce risks that affect profitability, operations, and the balance sheet.

Have you added locations, employees, equipment, products or services? Entered new geographic markets? Acquired another company? Changed how products are manufactured or delivered?

Even positive changes can create exposures that were not contemplated when your insurance program was designed.

The question isn't simply whether your company has grown. It's whether your risk profile has changed with it.

2\. Where are you investing over the next 12–24 months?
Capital investments in technology, automation, facilities, equipment or acquisitions can change your company's risk profile. Your broker should understand where you're investing, and how those investments could change what needs to be protected.

3\. What could prevent you from hitting your growth plan?
A critical supplier fails. A cyberattack shuts down operations. Key talent leaves. Essential equipment goes offline. A major liability claim affects capital and management resources.

Identifying these risks before they become losses allows you to determine what should be prevented, mitigated, contractually transferred or insured.

4\. What contracts are changing the risk you're taking on?
Contracts can quietly create some of a company's largest exposures.

Customer agreements, leases, vendor contracts and subcontractor agreements can shift responsibility from one organization to another through indemnification provisions, insurance requirements and additional insured obligations.

Signing the contract is a business decision. Understanding the risk being assumed should be part of that decision.

5\. Where are you having difficulty attracting or keeping employees?
Workforce challenges aren't just an HR issue. Turnover, benefits costs, hard-to-fill positions, and an aging workforce can directly affect productivity, profitability, and the company's ability to execute its growth strategy.

Understanding these challenges allows your benefits strategy to move beyond simply renewing health insurance and toward supporting the company's broader workforce objectives.

The Bigger Question
Your insurance program should follow your business strategy, not last year's renewal.

Before your next renewal, consider one question:
Does your broker know where your business is going, or only what policies you bought last year?

Better Questions. Better Risk Decisions.
Protect Where Your Business Is Going.
Business Strategy First. Insurance Strategy Follows.
