IMPORTANT:  New law effective 6-30-23 will affect you

IMPORTANT: 
CHANGES TO MICHIGAN'S DISTRACTED DRIVING LAW
TAKES EFFECT JUNE 30, 2023

With distracted driving accounting for nearly 25% of all fatal crashes in Michigan, the state's current distracted driving law has recently been expanded to include more restrictions on the use of mobile electronic devices.

While the old law banned drivers from reading, typing and texting, the new law also now prohibits the use of a mobile electronic device to:

• Send or receive a telephone call
  
• Send, receive or read a text message
• View, record or transmit a video
• Access, read or post to a social networking site

Major exemptions to the law include:

• Calling or texting 9-1-1
• Using a GPS
• Using a device in voice-operated or hands-free mode
• Use by first responders or public utility employees while carrying out official duties or emergencies.
  
  

The new law also increases fines for violating the rules and doubles the fines if the violation occurs during an accident.

NOTE:  Cell phone violations are considered moving violations by some insurance carriers because they increase the chance of being in an accident.

We recommend you distribute these changes to all employees, especially company drivers.
