In the aftermath of such a traumatic event, many questions arise including whether injuries sustained are covered by workers' compensation.

The eligibility for workers' compensation benefits in cases of active shooter incidents depends on various factors, including the specific circumstances of the event, the laws in the jurisdiction where the incident occurred, and the policies of the employer's workers' compensation insurance provider.

Workplace violence injuries are generally covered by workers' compensation, provided that the incident occurred within the scope of employment. Workers' compensation is designed to provide benefits to employees who sustain injury or illnesses arising out of and in the course of their employment, regardless of fault.  Coverage typically extends to injuries resulting from workplace violence, including incidents such as assaults, shootings, or other acts of violence perpetrated by coworkers, customers, or third parties.

Employees who suffer injuries in workplace violence incidents may be entitled to workers' compensation benefits which can include:

  • coverage for medical expenses
  • wage replacement for time off work
  • rehabilitation services
  • psychological trauma or emotional stress

Workers' compensation laws vary by jurisdiction, and there may be specific requirements or limitations regarding coverage for injuries in certain states or regions.
